18 EXT. CEMETERY — NIGHT 18

Karl’s hands struggle as earth rains down into the open grave... [The same shot as before.] A SCREAM—

19 INT. SARCOPHAGUS ROOM — EVENING 19

Karl’s SCREAM shatters the quiet of the sarcophagus room. Then Karl’s sarcophagus unbolts, and Karl comes out. The other vampire kids come out of their sarcophagi. They’re miffed.

ESSIE

There better be a reason you interrupted my beauty sleep.

Karl’s breathing hard. He wipes his forehead. He’s sweating blood.

MERRILL

My God, Karl, your thoughts are so confused I can’t read them at all!

KARL

Then don’t read them!

ESSIE

Whoo. Bite her head off, why don’t you?

Marty hops out of his sarcophagus and comes over.

MARTY

Having a tough time, Karl?

KARL

I’m fine.

MARTY

“The chill” getting to you?

KARL

I’ll be fine!

MARTY

Let’s face facts, why don’t we? You don’t belong here, do you?

Karl stares at him.

MARTY (cont’d)

You never did. You’re not as smart as the rest of us. You’re not good at anything. Are you? Aside from making furniture into kindling.

KARL

Marty, I—

MARTY

We know who our Makers were. You were left for dead. We were selected for Murdoch’s grand experiment. You just
happened to be buried in the neighborhood.

Karl looks around at the other vampire kids.

MARTY (cont’d)

I’m only saying what everyone else is too polite to say. (to the others) If I’m wrong, feel free to speak up.

KARL looks around, stricken.

DREW sighs, exasperated at Marty. MERRILL sighs, saddened.

ESSIE gets back into her sarcophagus.

But no one contradicts Marty.

KARL gets out of his sarcophagus and slinks out through the already-broken door. Marty calls after him triumphantly.

MARTY (cont’d)

Oh Karl? There’s a nice wooden cabinet you forgot to smash up the last time!

20 EXT. COUNTRY ROAD BY CEMETERY — NIGHT 20

Karl walks down an unlit country road, staring at his feet. He hears VOICES. He lifts his head up, brightens.

JOE (O.S.)

Imagine if he were here, man.

FRANK (O.S.)

He is. Right over there.

Karl takes a step back. But FRANK gestures off towards where we can see rows of headstones: a cemetery. It’s Karl’s two football buddies. JOE is Black, Frank is white, both are linebackers. They’re sitting in the headlights of their PICKUP TRUCK, sipping cans of root beer.

JOE

Who’d a thought, man. Dead at seventeen.

FRANK

Sucks.

JOE

It does suck.

Karl watches his two buddies, longing written on his face.

FRANK

And four days before the game.
