MARIAN HACKETT

Come on, little hemophage. I can cure what you’ve got.

Something moves in the shadows. She pressed a trigger on the device. A FLASH lights up the cemetery. Nothing there. The device whines, recharging.

28 EXT. CEMETERY — NIGHT 28

Karl collapses by the hole he’s dug. A revving noise. Karl doesn’t move.

Drew rides up on a Harley motorcycle. Cherry. Beautiful.

DREW

Hey.

Karl doesn’t move.

DREW (cont’d)

Hey, Karl.

KARL

I’m busy.

DREW

I can see that. Could you help me for a moment?

KARL

No.

DREW

Please?

Karl props himself up on his elbows, puzzled.

KARL

What?

DREW

That’s yours, right?

Vampire High "A Grave Matter" 22.

He points to Karl’s gravestone. Gets off the bike.

KARL

You can read, right?

DREW

I need you to help me move it.

KARL

Move it?

Drew grabs Karl’s headstone and starts to heave. It barely budges.

DREW

You gonna watch, or are you gonna lend a hand?

29 EXT. ELSEWHERE IN THE CEMETERY — NIGHT 29

Marian Hackett starts to jog forward, sweeping the flashlight device in front of her.

30 EXT. CEMETERY — NIGHT 30

Karl and Drew, with massive effort, pull the headstone out of the ground.

DREW

You couldn’t have got limestone, or something lighter? It had to be granite.

KARL

Granite’s your basic long-lasting headstone. Not fancy like marble, but it won’t weather away like limestone does.

(off Drew)

Uncle Willy’s an undertaker.

He frowns at the memory. They lay it down.

DREW

Next time, get plastic, okay? Now we’re moving that one...

He points at a headstone a little ways over.

31 EXT. ELSEWHERE IN THE CEMETERY — NIGHT 31

Marian Hackett starts to run, flashlight jiggling like The Blair Witch Project.

32 EXT. CEMETERY — NIGHT 32

Karl and Drew carry the other headstone over.

DREW

Now inside...

They slide the headstone into the hole.

KARL

Drew?

DREW

Now your headstone goes into the other guy’s hole...

They grab Karl’s headstone and start to manhandle it over to the other grave.

KARL

You really had the chill?

Drew tries to think how to answer that. There’s a lot of pain there. There’s a lot he wants to say, if he could. But in the end, all he says is...

DREW

What do you think?

KARL

I’m sorry.

DREW

You’re sorry.

They slide the headstone into the other grave.

DREW

I actually tried to say hello to my dog once, after. Because, you know, he couldn’t tell anyone? But he just kept barking at me. I guess it’s the way we smell, now.

(a little bitter)

It never really goes away, you know. “The chill.” You learn to live with it, that’s all.

KARL

You do?

Vampire High "A Grave Matter" 24.

(CONTINUED)

DREW

(frowns)

If you can find a reason to hope. Maybe.

They slide the headstone in. Karl looks around.

KARL

I can’t go back to them. Can I?

Drew shakes his head.

Karl looks around. In the distance, Marian’s flashlight sweeps.

KARL (cont’d)

I guess I don’t really want to stay here, either.

DREW

Place kind of gives me the creeps.

KARL

So what do I do now?

Drew smiles, and gestures at the bike.

DREW

Accept no substitutes.

Karl looks at Drew. Drew looks at Karl. They share a grin.

33 EXT. ELSEWHERE IN THE CEMETERY — NIGHT 33

Karl and Drew rip down a line of headstones going full bore on Drew’s bike, Drew driving, Karl standing on the seat and
holding on to Drew’s shoulders.

DREW AND KARL

YEEEEE HAAAAA!

MARIAN HACKETT

sees the oncoming motorcycle. She squints into the blaze of the bike’s headlight.

MARIAN HACKETT

Oh, my God.

She aims—

Something RUSTLES nearby. She swings, fires—

Vampire High "A Grave Matter" 25.

FLASH! But it’s just a stick.

DREW AND KARL

YEEEEE HAAAAA!

The boys whip past her, popping a wheelie. Marian aims the device back at the bike, but it’s still whining, recharging.

MARIAN HACKETT

Come on!

KARL

Hey, Drew, can we stop off somewhere?

The bike disappears behind a cemetery building just as— Marian fires again, a big FLASH illuminating the building. The bike ROARS off invisibly into the night.

MARIAN HACKETT

Next time. I swear.

The noise of the bike fades away until it’s gone.

Frustrated, Marian Hackett turns and heads onwards towards Karl’s grave site, disappearing into the blackness of the
night. After a moment, Murdoch emerges from behind a mausoleum, holding another stick. He watches Marian go.

FADE OUT.

34 INT. HALLWAY — NIGHT 34

Murdoch returns to his office, slamming back a cup of espresso.

MURDOCH (V.O.)

“The chill” never does go away. Human children, once they’ve grown up, will never really be part of the family they
grew up in. Vampires can never go home again. But if you can make a new home somewhere, with new people...
He opens the door.

From the inside, a loud MOO comes.

Murdoch stares inside his office. And sighs.

FADE OUT.
