Arnod Paole's story in one of the rare documented Vampire stories. In the year 1727 he finished serving military duty and returned home in Meduegna situated close to Belgrade. He started farming, and later he married the daughter of one his neighboring farmers.
Paole admitted to his wife that he expected to die young, because when he was a soldier he had killed a lot of people and believed that they would come back and avenge their deaths. And these spirits would come to him in the form of a Vampire, he knew this because he claimed that a Vampire had visited while he was on active duty. After this encounter he searched for the grave of the Vampire and dug up the corpse and burnt it, this left such a mark on his conscious state of mind it affected his work and was advised to leave the army.
While working on his farm he had an accident, he was bought back unconscious to his house. But because of his internal injuries he died a few days later. A month after his death people began to claim that they had seen him, and these very same people who had claimed to have seen him died a short time afterwards. It was decided to exhume his body to put everyone's fears to rest.

A month after his death people began to claim that they had seen him, and these very same people who had claimed to have seen him died a short time afterwards. It was decided to exhume his body to put everyone's fears to rest. A group of men consisting of two military officers, two surgeons and a priest were called upon to investigate the corpse, their diagnosis the corpse show no signs of deterioration over the period of time that it had been buried. Even his finger nails had fallen off to be replaced by new ones, what swayed the final judgement was that there was traces of fresh blood on his lips he was a Vampire. It was decided to stake him through his heart, while carrying out this act the fresh blood flowed from the wound and the corpse screamed. This deed was repeated at every grave of his suspected victims, and then garlic was scattered around their remains

In 1732 there was an recurrence of unexplainable deaths, immediately an investigation of the graveyard took place. All the corpses were disinterred and 11 corpses showed the same traits and marks as those on the Paole corpse. So the conclusion was that Paole had feasted on the cattle, and because he had fed on the cattle he had passed on his Vamperic qualities to the cattle and then this was passed on again to the people who ate the meat of the cattle.
